SUITC was founded in 1997. Originally established as Shaanxi International Trade & Commerce Training College, it was renamed Shaanxi International Trade & Commerce Vocational College in 2002 to offer junior college education. In 2008, it was elevated to a private undergraduate university and adopted its current name. The university was authorized to confer bachelor’s degrees in 2012, passed the Ministry of Education’s Qualification Assessment for Undergraduate Teaching in 2015, and was designated as a Model Institution for Joint Master’s Degree Training in 2017. In 2024, it underwent the Ministry of Education’s Review and Evaluation of Undergraduate Education and Teaching, and in 2025, it was approved as a Project Construction Unit for Granting Master’s Degrees. On its campus, the university has 209 labs and training facilities, 4 Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, and 2 Provincial Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Centers. Additionally, it has been recognized with 12 provincial-level practice education platforms, including a university-level innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base, a Provincial Maker Space Incubation Base, and a Provincial Labor Education Practice Base.

Relying on its corporate backing, SUITC has aligned its efforts with the national “Healthy China” strategy to build collaborative research platforms shared by the university and its supporting enterprise. It has jointly established 1 Postdoctoral Research Station with Buchang Pharmaceutical Group, and boasts 25 research platforms including the Shaanxi Academician Expert Workstation on Biomedicine Innovation Technology, the Shaanxi Provincial Innovation Service Platform for TCM Industry Technology, and the Health Culture Research Center, a Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences for Shaanxi Higher Education Institutions.

The university has undertaken 855 research projects at the departmental-level or above, including 1 project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 2 projects of the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC), and 6 projects of the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Fund. It has also received 48 provincial and departmental-level science and technology awards, 5 of which are Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards.

According to the “2024 Research Competitiveness Ranking of China’s Private Undergraduate Universities Based on Strength Evaluation,” the university ranks 25th nationwide and 2nd among private universities (including formerly independent colleges) in Shaanxi Province, putting its research competitiveness in the top 10 percent of all private universities nationwide.

SUITC has been actively engaged in international exchanges and cooperation, establishing partnerships with universities and institutions in 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the United States, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Hungary, and New Zealand. Together with the Southern College of Technology in Thailand, SUITC co-authored and published the Education Book Series on Traditional Chinese Medicine Science Communication. It has also been selected as one of the first batch of universities under the “China-ASEAN Thousand Schools Hands Together Initiative”, which was officially launched by the Ministry of Education of China to promote educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges on a larger scale and at deeper level between China and ASEAN countries. In addition, SUITC runs talent cultivation programs in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University (UK), Beacon International College (Singapore), Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University (Thailand), and Tun Abdul Razak University (Malaysia). It has also jointly established the International Center for the Study of Historical Records and Culture with Kyrgyzstan National University. By offering international academic seminars, study tours, and academic advancement pathways for both faculty and students, SUITC has fostered a multi-channel, multi-level framework for international exchange and cooperation.
